The Philosophy Of Leadership And Leadership - 914 Words

1. Leadership is defined on Merriam-Webster.com as â€Å"the power or ability to lead other people†. This definition is weak at best. Throughout my career, I have witnessed this form of leadership applying control of power, simply leading by giving direction, guidelines and instruction. There never seemed to be any care for if they were actually inspiring the next generation to follow in their footsteps. This seems counterproductive at best. In my experience, I have found that I always worked harder for and trusted more in a leader who I was able to connect with, admire, or look up to. Recognition from an admired leader inspired me to do more. So my philosophy on leadership is: Inspire those around you by respecting them, giving recognition, coaching and finally lead by example. 2. The philosophy of leadership I strive for can be defined as inspirational in type. One of the greatest things about this philosophy style is that it creates trust among everyone. When I was a young seaman on the Coast Guard Cutter Sedge, I was not among this idealized example of inspirational leadership. We were often broken down by superiors with derogatory name calling or negative motivation. At no time during my 2 years aboard can I remember a time when I admired the leadership.
